circular error

According to, I should update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines:

If the file version number starts with 6:
  1. Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine from the machine.
  2. Download IkernelUpdate.exe.
  3. Once downloaded, double-click it. This installs the InstallShield engine for your installation.

But when I install IkernelUpdate.exe, I get an error that again directs me to update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines in an endless circle.

I have an MSI log, it does not make me any wiser:

Your problem is Windows Installer. The actual Microsoft Installer (MSI) engine is broken.

Well, I can see that something is broken ;o)

I even found a proposed fix. But the fixing was blocked by the original problem.

Do you say I should reinstall something from MS, rather than from Installshield?

(Don't think I'll need ot install anything more on this machine anyway, but always interested in solutions, even to old problems.)
